      Mr. Lavanya Kumar Consul General of India, Milan     Mr. Lavanya Kumar is a career diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service with the rank of Minister. He joined the diplomatic service in 2009. Mr. Kumar served in various capacities in the Ministry of External Affairs, including as Assistant Secretary in the Consular, Passport and Visa Division, and as Under Secretary for Bhutan in the Northern Division. In the latter capacity, he handled Indian loan and grant assistance for various bilateral development projects, including hydroelectric projects in the Kingdom of Bhutan. He also served in various Indian missions abroad, including the Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the UN Offices in Geneva. In the PMI, he handled work related to the World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The exports from India to Italy reached EUR 9.02 billion, a decrease of -1.9% compared to the previous year 2023. During 2024, India's imports from Italy was EUR 5.22 billion, registered an increase of 1.0% compared to the year 2023. The balance of trade remains in India's favour with EUR 3.8 billion.   • India-Italy Bilateral Relations

    INDIA-ITALY BILATERAL RELATIONS          India and Italy are ancient civilizations with rich cultural heritage. Italian port cities were important trading posts on the ancient spice route. The Venetian merchant Marco Polo, during his travels to the east, travelled to India in the 13th century and wrote about his experiences. Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore visited Italy in May-June 1926. Mahatma Gandhi visited Rome in December 1931 on his way back to India from the Round Table Conference in London. Indian troops, serving with the British Indian Army, were deployed in Italy during World War II, fighting against the Germans and Mussolini’s forces. Diplomatic relations with Italy were established in 1947. In 2023, both countries celebrated the 75thanniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.The two countries enjoy a strong people-to-people connect with a large Indian diaspora.
